NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

Object:- National Service Scheme commonly known as N.S.S. is a voluntary value based scheme under   which the student youths are involved in community service for their personality development.

Ontogeny:- N.S.S. was inducted in the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi on 24th Sept.1969, by the Human Resource Development Department ,Government of India, as a third dimension of education .Its main object is to establish a meaningful linkage between the campus and the community. Students, teachers and the community - all these three are basic components of N.S.S.

N.S.S. Activities in Midnapore College :- Since inception (1969) Midnapore College N.S.S. units have played a commendable role by inflaming a new ray of prospect for a brighter future of the nation through constant efforts. Effects of N.I camp(1992),special camps, health camps etc organized by our college have gone a long way in dispelling darkness from the minds of many .

Impact:- Midnapore College has rich heritage and has blazed a saga of success in the field of education .It is one of the eldest and oldest colleges in W.B. Our devoted teachers bear the legacy and heritage of the past . The students are gaining not only education of quality but also are improving their level of thinking, character-building and talent, time management, behavioral change etc through N.S.S activities, parallel with the normal education .The significant achievements were possible due to the their earnest efforts, in the direction of their mission, dedication and commitment to mission of  N.S.S.

Achievement:- Midnapore College N.S.S. activities have achieved a mark of glory in the national level. Our N.S.S. unit participated in Magadh University N.I. camp(1999) , N.I. camp in Tripura(1999), P.R.D camp in Meghalaya(1999),Warrangal(2000) and Assam(2000) respectively. It is of course a matter of prestige and pride for our college that our college N.S.S. unit was selected for participation in Republic Day parade camp in New Delhi twice in the year 2000 and 2001 and our college N.S.S. Programme Officer Sri Ganga Pada Tripathi was selected contingent leader from N.S.S. Eastern Region, Kolkata and got the honour of  'Best N.S.S. Programme Officer' and was trained in Rajib Gandhi National Institute of youth development, SriPerumbudur, Tamil Nadu (2001) by the Govt.of India , Department of Youth Affairs and Sports. He was also selected for Indira Gandhi National Award but due to proper recommendations from the state he was deprived .

Special camping programme:-

A).     College N.S.S. Unit organized Special Camping Programme in the adopted slums and following major Activities were undertaken (Period from 04.11.2001 to 13.11.2001.

(i)                  Health and Hygiene Programme.

(ii)                Health Check up Camp with the help of eminent doctors.

            Beneficiaries : Male & Female :: Total = 1237.

(iii)               Eye Check-up Camp with the help of resource Doctors from Vidyasagar Optometry, Kolkata  and      Optometric Association of India.

             Beneficiaries   :   Male &  Female  :: Total = 283

(iv)              Construction of Link Road about 300 meters.

Durable assets created by N.S.S :-

1.      Two N.S.S. Gardens

2.      One Medicinal Plant Garden

3.      One Flower Garden

4.      Plantation :-

      a)      300 valuable Timber yielding Plants in the College Campus.

       b)      450 Saplings are planted in the Girls’ Hostel.

 Health Programme:-

1. Organized Blood Donation Camp in November, 2001

     Nos. of units of Blood donated    :   71  

     68 students and 3 Programme Officers donated blood      

 2.Organised Thalassaemia Blood Screening Camp with the help of Thalassaemia Foundation, Kolkata (Mithun Chakraborty, renowned Film Star’s Organization) in the College Campus on 22nd December, 2001, and 215 students participated in the camp, of which 20 students were found career of the disease.
